Traffic signs

Signalling and securing job sites are the first steps to complete successfully any construction work. Road signs announce the presence of field technicians on site, especially to car drivers during roadworks, they encourage people to slow down and increase their vigilance to avoid accidents. Road users (including pedestrians and cyclists) should not be put at risk, and should be able to see the extent and nature of any obstruction well before they reach it. That’s why temporary site works signs need to be easy to understand: simple graphics and words are better than complex instruction to allow a person to make an immediate decision. What traffic sign do you need when doing roadworks?

To choose the right temporary construction signs you need to identify the message you have to deliver. The HSE advices you to carry out a risk assessment answering these questions:

  • Where do I need temporary signs?
  • What are the potential hazards?
  • Who has right of way at crossings?
  • Do I need to warn? Inform?

The message must be clear and unobstructed. According to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 20116, temporary traffic & site works signs are divided in 4 major categories: warning (triangular signs), requirement, restriction (such as temporary speed limit signs) and prohibition. By law, road signs used to warn or inform drivers and pedestrians in private workplaces must be the same as those used on public roads, wherever a suitable sign exists. Many are typically recognizable, such as the “road works ahead” triangular sign, but others might need to be more specific depending on the work performed and the place. That’s why warning signs often must be conveyed by supplementary plates, used only in combination with these signs, to dispense more information to road users.

The shape of a traffic sign communicates important information about the sign's message. In poor visibility conditions, such as heavy fog, road users may be able to only detect the shape of a sign, which is why some signs needs to be fluorescent or illuminated.

On highways, the panels’ size has to be bigger than on city or country roads for example.

Where to place temporary construction signs?

To be efficient, temporary road signs need to be placed according to the type of road the work site is on: the faster people can drive on the highway, the further the sign should be placed. You must consider the size of the works area, the working space (around the works area, where you need to store your equipment) and the safety zone (the necessary space to protect you from traffic and protect the other road users from you). Of course, you must place the signs meters before your safety zone to let others notice your spot before they reach you.

The positioning of your signs will also depend of their category: they aren’t fluorescent or illuminated place them even further to be sure road users see them in advance.
